A Paperless Flight

I type this sitting on a flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles with a wide eyed stare following the beautiful California coast. I was recently gifted a Kindle and I am a huge fan thus far. My first action was buying Rework by the amazing 37signal founders Jason Fried and David Hansson, the book alone is worth a separate post once I fully digest the fresh wisdom spawned in the book.

The Kindle makes reading an effortless exercise, unlike my cross trainer session this morning that kicked my ass. I love how easily pages turn and how quickly I get into a great reading zone. I have also thrown some PDF documents on it and though the screen can not zoom or increase font size, the joy of flipping through documents away from my laptop is worth the sacrifice.

My last praise is for the Kindle’s highlighting function. I’m a huge highlighting fanatic, when I am reading I will highlight sections I love and also dog ear the bottom of pages. It is quite the process but is the best way I have found to quickly find quotes that I wished to come back to. The Kindle allows me to highlight any section of text and pulls all highlights into “My Clippings” document that becomes a best-of from any book I read — I love it!

I know I am late to the game for e-readers, and I could and likely will try to replace the Kindle with a slate device, but for now I’m loving my new Kindle, even if the flight attendant forces me to shut it off for take off and landing.
