From the Full Moon Party we yearned for some normalcy and a bit of relaxation and was at least delivered on one of those items. Off we went to Phuket, an island of Thailand with some amazing sights and is truly best as a jumping point to the even smaller neighboring islands. Phuket also has quite the showy underbelly though, “ladyboys”. Literally transvestites and they have some how found their paradise here. Some locals even warned us that nearly half of the women you could see in certain area are ladyboys.
We stayed at Kata Beach and were surprisingly greeted by a beach of surfbreak and an amazing island perfectly in the way of the sunset from our hotel. It makes for some picturesque moments that I’ll try to capture here soon. We got two days of surfing on the beach and each was a wonderful relaxing. Fun moments of us forgetting about our travels and just splashing about and enjoying the simple and enjoyable ride.
Our all day boat trip was simply incredible. One of those moments you wonder how you don’t have a camera crew following you around, because no one should believe how amazing this is. We opted to get a private tour as opposed to getting sardined into the group packages and it was definitely the recommendable choice. Our amazing guide, Dong, who reminded us a bit of Lloyd from Entourage in all of the best ways, picked us up at our hotel at 8 AM. Jumped straight to our speed boat and we were off to the Phi Phi islands. Phi Phi Leh is the picturesque location of “The Beach” and offers insane sights, it helps to get there a little earlier lead by Dong we were able to stay just a little ahead of the main tour groups, which quickly turn a beach in the middle of no where to a scene from Disneyland. We explored around Phi Phi Leh some more, stopping to swim in a sheltered lagoon, and snorkel amongst the wildlife. I was always the first to jump in and the last to get back in to the boat, but every time it was worth it because the next place was even more amazing.
We then went to Phi Phi Don, the larger and a little more commercialized with restaurant and hotel choices. I would strongly consider staying on Phi Phi Don if I ever came back. We had lunch in a beach side restaurant that Dong had arranged for us to have the restaurants best table, closest to the beach all with drift wood furniture that is my absolute favorite. We then went to another more secluded beach where we the only people there, a place that only a private tour includes and again I was in the water snorkeling with an array of colorful fishies.
I looked up and saw that everyone else was in the boat, and I was totally by myself in the water diving to the bottom of the shallow reef and just couldn’t believe how good life was. As they threw bread and banana around me chumming the water I let the fish surround and nibble on me in a feeding frenzy of colors that is hard to put in words.
