Harajuku was one part Soho and one part LES.
The main drag has obviously lost it’s “cool” movement and been absolutely over run by the throngs of tourists and high end designers botuiques just as Soho is today. But if your bold and brave enough to venture deep into the into the neighborhood and past the Gucci, LV, and Dolce is a bit of the LES true hard to find uniqueness. Such stores with stock lists of itself and maybe less than a dozen other stores around the world. I really enjoyed both sides of Harajuku and having them all in one neighborhood really made me fall in love with it.
Being a bit of a Bape fanatic, pre-dating Pharrll and the likes thank you very much, it was an absolute Joy visiting Nigo’s shops and especially to have lunch in the Bape Cafe. I still continue to be a huge fan of bathing ape and judging by the constant flow of Bape gear I pass on the streets and line to just get into either of his Harajuku area shops shows I am still not alone. Not a bad Beef Curry either :)
Another day of almost all the english I hear being internal dialogue, but I liked it a lot more that way this time. I would find myself consciously avoiding other tourists and trying to repeat my Japanese in my head, still with very little meaning, I figure that will work it’s way out. The city really won me over, mostly because it reminded me of the parts that make me love NY so much. The unique sites and the amazing transportation that makes it all within reach. Hopefully nothig but more to come.
