Apple Announces In-App Purchases For Free iPhone Applications

Apple’s decision to finally open the floodgates of in app purchasing in free apps is BIG. Before, a developer could only offer in app purchases to consumers that already paid for the app, which protects the consumer assuring them they will never have to pay to play, but making them download an entirely other application if they want some of the more robust features. Now and in the future, every developer will be able to offer a single free application to build as many users as possible and then let customers pick and choose additional purchases in the application – ie: extra levels, new weapons, multiple user accounts for a twitter client, archival news access, removal of adds, etc.

This will also lead to a shuffling in the Most Downloaded category/competition allowing developers to measure all downloads of the same version instead of a combined count of free and paid premium versions.

Look out for smart developers trying new tactics to get as many free downloads as possible and offering incredible enticing small in application purchases to drive awareness and revenues.
