The Department of Justice should take a hint from... →
I am biased for too many reasons, but I love Google and continue to believe they make their choices based on their Don’t Be Evil mantra. I enjoyed this article, and think the message is true: this is not the same case with Microsoft in the 90’s and trying to take down a technology company for being big - for being successful - is the wrong fight.

The Netflix Prize Comes To A Buzzer-Beater,... →
Who knew statistical computing competitions could be so cut throat? Since we reported on the contest last night, two teams in the Netflix Prize have spent the last few hours jumping back and forth on the Netflix leaderboard as the three-year-long competition ticked into its final moments, with last minute sniping submissions coming from both sides. Finally, the results are in: The Ensemble has...

Traders Profit With Computers Set at High Speed -... →
Powerful computers, some housed right next to the machines that drive marketplaces like the New York Stock Exchange, enable high-frequency traders to transmit millions of orders at lightning speed and, their detractors contend, reap billions at everyone else’s expense. These systems are so fast they can outsmart or outrun other investors, humans and computers alike. And after growing in the...

Apple has 91% of market for $1,000+ PCs, says NPD... →
Move over Microsoft. Apple can claim big, big market share numbers, too. According to NPD, in June, nine out of 10 dollars spent on computers costing $1,000 or more went to Apple. Mac revenue market share in the “premium” price segment was 91 percent, up from 88 percent in May.

Announcing the Launch of Covestor Investment... →
This is unbelievable big, I’ve watched many incredible traders show returns that I would certainly want to be a part of and now have the oppourtunity. I’ve been waiting for them to open up such an offering, think I might have to get involved, sooner the better.

Machine Dreams › Vogue features Marissa Mayer →
This is definitely written by Vogue as opposed to Wired but they do a decent job filling the article with enough to keep both sides happy, just as Marissa does.

Where the heck is Etters? →
daryn: On October 27, 2002, an article appeared on the front page of the Harrisburg Patriot News entitled “Where the Heck is Etters?” that describes how people live in a place and have listed on their driver’s licenses a place that is not on a map. Working on local search, you see a lot of weird places. Today’s find was Etters, PA which is actually not a town, but rather the name of the post...

It’s hitting me that my amazing view including the Hudson River, Statue of Liberty, Brookly Bridge, the incredible scare scrapers of Midtown, and the Empire State Building will officially be gone tomorrow. the full report
urtak: Here is the full report by the teenage expert for Morgan Stanley UK. This is pretty funny to me because some have criticized us for having data that is not “scientific” enough, and here we have one of the world’s biggest banks publishing obvious nonsense based on no research at all. What is clear is that there is a huge demand for behavioral and psychographic information that is not...

“Mom, Grandma… It could be the Wii of the personal computers”
– Pasky (commenter on engadget) in regards to the perfect user of a simplified computer experience that Chrome OS is expected to deliver.  I just love the comparison to the Wii in how it brought people in that were previously afraid to even try video games.  The simplicity won them over and gave them...

Domecage Prisons →
“Starting with the question, “How does one design a space for a user who does not really want to be there,” Van der Sluis’ major contribution here is the view. Instead of regular prison yards with walls that only afford a view upwards, within the domes prisoners experience the horizon. Pierced with small holes at the white domes’ base creating a contrast not unlike...
